Edward Mackenzie 'Cultural Gear'
Edward Mackenzie's iconographic1980's Ata series celebrates the roots of graphic design in its rawest form with hand cut layered card and two dimensional assemblage. As well as highlighting a universal graphic language of pattern, line and colour, the designs are a study of something inherently familiar to the viewer, embracing our national identity. Each work in the Ata Series weaves the letters ‘N’ and ‘Z’ into playful tessellations of diamonds, sharks-teeth checkers and visual trickery. Mackenzie’s hand is evident in every line and corner, celebrating the materiality of the two dimensional surface as an object in itself.
